In this image I see a woman (I know that this woman is the artist, Cindy Sherman). She is lying on the ground. She is dirty and appears to be dead. There is green moss, stones and sticks. I think it would smell like a swamp or bog or just damp. The woman would feel wet and cold to the touch. The whole image has an eerie feel due to the lighting.
It looks like she has been drowned and her body left in water, like a swamp or bog, then pulled out. It looks like a crime scene photograph.
It makes me think of programmes such as CSI.
A possible story behind this image is that this woman was murdered, either drowned or another way and that her body was dumped in a body of water, such as a swamp. Someone has found her body and dragged it onto the land surrounding the swamp, where there is moss. Her murder is now being investigated which led to the taking of this photograph - it will be used as evidence.
The bigger issue/theme behind this image could purely be murder.
Tony Fomison, "What Shall We Tell Them?", oil on canvas, 1976
I see a large person, a small person, red ,brown, face, hats, dark colours, plain background.
It looks like a Medieval Jester, as he is wearing that style of hat. He is holding a small man wearing another unusual hat. The Jester is looking down on the small man he is holding.
It makes me think that they are having a conversation as the expression on the Jesters face suggests he is listening to the small man. I would assume it is in olden times and in a dark, sombre setting.
The story that comes to mind when I look at this work is that of Medieval/Peasant times. I feel as though the story being told is the Jester, who most likely is a servant of a Royal family, is telling someone of the lower working class secrets or stories about the Royal/wealthy family he is serving. It is almost like he is laughing behind their backs, which is ironic seeing as his job as a Jester is to make those that he serves laugh.
The bigger issues/themes behind this painting could be that of society and social categories, and how those that are more 'well-off' than others and who would often look down their noses at others may in fact be the ones that are being looked down on by those that are 'below' them in a social status.
Jerry Uelsmann, Untitled, 1989
I see hands, clouds, a naked boy, an old fashioned house, trees, black background, black and white.
It reminds me of what I imagine Heaven would look like as the house is sitting in the clouds and the boy looks like an angel. The hands make me think of a superior force, some may think God, but for those who don't believe in a God it leaves the imagination open to wander.
I wonder why the boy is standing outside the house and not going inside, the door is open but it is black inside. Perhaps he is not going in because of the blackness, perhaps something scary awaits him. I wonder why he is naked, it makes him appear more vulnerable. The clouds make the image seem like it is in a fantasy realm and the hands make it seem like this realm is encompassed by a larger being.
I think the story behind it is similar to divine occurrences, for example out of body experiences, or astral projection, which can also be the bigger theme behind the image.
Henry Moore, Two Figures Sharing the Same Green Blanket, 1940-41I see 2 figures, a blanket, yellow, black, feet, heads, a hand, sleeping.
It reminds me of homeless people sleeping in the street. I wonder why these people are lying together, sharing a blanket. Perhaps they are homeless and have to share a blanket between them.
I think the underlying story behind it is the innocence of homeless people and that we take so many things in life for granted when we should be appreciating the small things like comfort and warmth.
Raymond Ching, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos
I see 2 cockatoos, feathers, white, yellow, black, blue background, tail, wing, crests, beaks, eyes, soft, fluffy, smooth, preening.
When I look at this image I think of my own Sulphur Crested Cokatoo, Aussie. It reminds me of the smoothness of his feathers and the noise his feathers make when he preens them with his beak (which he is doing as I write this!).
The cockatoos could be getting ready for a sleep, but a daytime sleep as the blue in the background indicates there is a blue sky.
I don't think there is a huge underlying story behind this image, just the the artist, Raymond Ching, wanted to capture the beauty of this pair of cockatoos as the preened together and how natural it looks.
