Lens with Rebecca: MORE Research Famous Films - film stills

Film stills of famous horror movies

The Exorcist, 1973
This is something I want to experiment with a lot in my self portraiture. The angle of the camera, vantage point, enhances the shadows and highlights in Regan's face. Obviously some extra lighting was used so I will need to look at sourcing some lighting equipment if I am to use it in my final product. I really like the use of black and white because of the fact the lighting always seems more dramatic and depending on what mood I want my final product to be I need to experiment with different lighting. Outside, inside, dark, light, shadows, highlights, mid-tones. I also really like the use of fog or smoke in this image. Again, depending on what I want my final image to look like I could look at using something like this. I need to review the theme I have chosen or what I might chose and figure out what extra things I could use. The way the smoke/steam/fog picks up the light is very interesting and I think it looks amazing as it adds texture to the photo and changes the atmosphere. <- I need to research artists that use this kind of lighting/extra light sources for dramatic lighting effects, and artists that use things that create texture like the fog in this photo.

I really like this still from The Exorcist, 1973. It shows Regan, but if you look closely the image is overlayed. One image is of her face in her posessed state and the other image appears to be of her in a less insane state. When I look at this I think of split personality. I could use that in my portrait; show 2 different sides to one person. <- Need to look at artists that use this in their work. Also, I need to do some experimenting with my camera and photoshop to try and perfect this technique.

This image relates well to what I would like my theme to be. It is an example of sfx makeup but I also like the expression on Regan's face so when I take my photos I need to think about my expression and how my expression relates to what is on my face (i.e. makeup). The darkness around the face (almost creating a border) is an amazing effect. It captures the mood of the image and enhances the expression on her face. Rather than having a light background, or edge to the image, the darkness completes the image. It also brings out the dark shadows under her eyes. When I take my photos I need to think about this - how I want to present my photo in terms of overall darkness or lightness.

Experimentation I need to do
-experiment with different lighting conditions
  -inside, outside
  - exposure
  -ISO
-overlaying images in photoshop
-use of different effects to create texture
  -something physical (fog, smoke, steam)
  -texture created on photoshop
